Eastern Sierra trout-fishing season opens Saturday | Outposts | Los Angeles Times

The last Saturday in April is almost here — a day many freshwater anglers statewide look forward to with great anticipation because it marks the opening of the Eastern Sierra general trout-fishing season.

Many of them are likely en route or packing their gear in their vehicles, getting ready to hit the highways for some of their favorite fishing areas in Inyo and Mono counties, hoping to find the spot where they can catch their daily limit or their first lunker.

Department of Fish and Game is stocking as many bodies of water as possible, though each water planted throughout California must now go through a “Pre-Stocking Evaluation Protocol,” which requires the DFG to consider sensitive or listed species in each water relative to the stocking of trout, in response to a legal action challenging its hatchery and stocking operations.

“We have planted more than 56,000 pounds of trout for the opener and expect to plant about as many trout as usual by July,” said Bill Cox, Department of Fish and Game Hatchery Program Manager.

Fishing Report: Hot Inshore & Offshore Fishing Around Tampa Bay

Hello From Anna Maria,

It’s typical April here on the Island of Anna Maria, the weather is great and fishing is even better. Tampa and Sarasota Bay fishing on the flats, near shore and offshore is spectacular. It’s like I always tell people, April is so good inshore and offshore it’s hard to decide which direction to go. I guess that’s why I spend some part of the day inshore and part of the day offshore because I hate to feel like I’m missing out on any of the action. You name it and it’s biting, well maybe I shouldn’t say that because we are a couple of weeks away from tarpon season, but I have already been seeing a few around and there are some at the bridges as well.

Inshore the trout have been on fire, possibly the best trout fishing I have ever done. They are everywhere, they are big and they are biting. Almost all the trout we are catching are keepers, 17 to 20 inches has been the average size. Pretty much every day we fish for them we have been catching trout up to 23 inches. We have been getting a lot in the 24 to 27 inch class, true trophy size fish. The trout are looking great and I couldn’t be happier, it’s great to see the species flourish.

Fish & Game: fishing in Idaho ‘better than ever’ « Idaho Reporter

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) says that fishing in the state is better than ever, based on recent increases in fishing license sales. Ed Mitchell, spokesman for the department, believes the increases may be due to several factors, including the slumping economy.

IDFG figures this week showed that sales of licenses in 2009 were at their highest levels since 1999, and sales for the beginning of 2010 are also up. According to the department, fishermen purchased 473,576 licenses last year, and sales for this year are keeping paces with last year’s trend. Some licenses are seeing double-digit gains. Residential licenses, up 19 percent, resident junior licenses, up 27 percent, resident disabled licenses, up 36 percent, three-day salmon and steelhead permits, up 33 percent, and steelhead licenses, up 15 percent, are all seeing increased interest from consumers.

Spring patterns may finally be back in the air

Well the sun has started to shine and the forecast is for the winds to diminish, so maybe we will finally start to transition into spring fishing patterns.

Water temperatures are ranging from the mid 60s offshore to the low 70s in the backcountry. Trout, whiting, sheepshead, black drum and the always-abundant ladyfish are still the mainstay of most fishing trips inshore, but more and more sightings of snook are being made and a few are being caught. Redfish are also still around and eating everything from cut ladyfish under the bushes to shrimp being floated under a cork. No one is seeing any bait yet, but with the weather improving that should change quickly.

Offshore the wind of the past few days has caused a number of cancellations, but when the guys get out there the snapper are continuing to eat live shrimp and cut bait. The offshore boats are also reporting that bait is scarce on the regular spots. Spanish mackerel are starting to make their presence known, and the captains report that the kings have been holding about 50 miles south of Naples. A few degrees difference of water temp should help trigger a move north.

Salmon Fishing On Lake Michigan

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

Lake Michigan is fantastic for Salmon fishing. Living in Chicago, and having an uncle with a boat, made it possible for me to have many happy memories of fishing with my father and great uncle.

The lake is the third largest of all the North American Great Lakes, and the sixth largest lake in the entire world. Because of the lake’s depth, salmon thrive in its waters. On average the lake runs about 279 feet deep and, almost reaches 1000 feet in the deepest parts!

Last year my great uncle passed away from cancer.  I went to visit him before he died, and we remembered back to all the times that he had taken me salmon fishing on his boat. Going out on his boat is one of the most clear and  happy memories that I have of childhood. Fishing is like that.

My uncle had a large V-bottom boat with a below deck kitchen, sleeping area, and a small bathroom.  I can’t remember the make or anything like that, but it sure was a blast to sail!

Types of Salmon

Our primary purpose was to bag some keeper fish, namely the various types of Salmon that thrive in the deep cold waters of Lake Michigan.  We would set out from Burns Harbor in quest of the big salmon.

Coho were one of the smaller species of salmon that we would catch, with the mature adults averaging 28 inches long and 7 to 15 pounds. They still fight well, but there are bigger fish!

We would also catch rainbow trout, or what we called Steelhead, which from what I understand are the ocean going form, and are thus called Steelhead.

Without a doubt the biggest prize that we were after was the Chinook Salmon, also known as the King salmon. The Chinook “King” Salmon is the largest species of fish in the salmon family.

These bad boys are no joke, with the adult fish ranging in size from 30 to 45 inches in length, and weighing in between 15 to 60 pounds, with some fish exceeding 100 pounds. That’s a lot of fight let me tell you!

My Most Memorable Salmon Catch

One time I hooked into a monster King Salmon. It hit hard and ran like the wind. The reel was screaming and I was getting down to the knot.
My uncle had to turn the boat around so that I could recover some line. No sooner had I regained some line on my reel when he took off again.

My uncle had to turn the boat around once again.

The third time the fish came out of the water and danced along the top of the water on his tail for what seemed like one hundred feet.  It was amazing to see, and even a bit intimidating, the darn thing was just about as tall as I was!

After over an hour of this back and forth I finally landed the monster.  It was huge, the largest fish I’ve ever caught still to this day.

Storms on the Great Lakes

Lake Michigan is a lot like the ocean when a storm comes up. I remember several times when we had to hurriedly pack up the fishing equipment and high-tail it back home.

It was amazing how fast things could change on the lake. It could be nice and calm one minute, and then a few moments later you would feel a cold wind, and then all of a sudden, whitecaps would be slapping hard against the boat.

Fishing Equipment

We would use down-riggers to bring our lures to the depth necessary to catch fish. Most of the time the fish would run deep, except in the spring when you could find fish at about 15 feet. J-plug lures were the standard. Orange and green were the best colors to use.

We also would use heavy fishing rod and reel combos.  The average rod would just simply snap if you hooked a good one – and chances were, you most likely would. The fish finder was a must. It’s a big lake, and without this piece of equipment, I don’t think that we would have caught so many fish.

The Chicago Skyline

On time we sailed across the southern tip of the lake from Burns Harbor in Indiana all the way to Chicago. We arrived at twilight just when the sun was setting behind the buildings.

The lights after dark were incredible.  I had been downtown many times, but the view from the lake was quite impressive, even to a seasoned Chicagoan.

If you come to Chicago, be sure to do some Salmon fishing on the lake!
